Vikki and Matt Visit

Image
We were looking forward to the weekend ahead because our great friends Vikki and Matt were travelling down from London to spend some time with us. Unfortunately, the weather heard and decided to give Vikki her first Welsh Storm. To be honest, it was pretty yuck over all of Wales, and there were warnings out everywhere. Even Princess Eugenie had a bit of windy wedding at Windsor (yes, I did watch it). But Matt and Vikki braved the weather and headed down the M4 anyway. Saturday morning started with Dan heading off to his park run, which was cancelled because the river looked like this.  But we were determined to check out the Big Pit Museum despite the rain. Armed with jackets and scarves we headed out into the elements.  Arriving at the Big Pit we were greeted by a train. We took a picture for all our train enthusiast family members.  We had been told that The Big Pit was the best mining experience you could have. We weren't so sure at first, it seemed

Dan and I went for a walk. We found some horses. They were way closer than the photo shows. The view was good. The wind was strong. It is a little disconcerting walking down a narrow lane (not shown) when the wind is blowing and you keep thinking you hear a car. It is important to hear cars because they come up fast and there is not really much room for one car, let alone one car and people. #welshroads #ukroads #postmanpatroadsarereal We also went to meet Dan's extended family on his Dad's side. He has a Great Uncle & Auntie living in Newport plus a bunch of his Dad's cousins/cousins children/cousins children's children. It was great to meet them all. Stupidly I only took this picture. The 'kids' were all hanging out together in the playroom. I'm not sure what Hannah is doing lol. Hannah has been practising her soup eating skills at the Chewsday lunch, a lunch a group from Castle Square put on every Tuesday. People come along and

We woke up to a beautiful day. So breakfast by the sea was in order. The historic dockyard called today and so we headed back to where we were yesterday. We only had a few hours before our lunch date, so the aim was to fit in as many boats as we could. First stop the HMS Victory, launched 1765, Lord Nelson's boat. It does look a bit like a pirate ship. Note that the masts are shorter than they should be. The boat is undergoing some restoration. It was a fascinating tour. Asher was under strict instructions not to listen to everything on the audio guide. We managed to catch up with a tour that was happening for some official looking navy people and so we got to listen to the story of Lord Nelson's death on the boat. It was a very heroic death and he was clearly a well loved and honoured man, who led the British to victory against the Spanish.  Our next stop was a very small ship that served during the G
