Off with her head!

Tube. 
We feel like we have conquered this beast. We can read the map, find where we need to go and actually do it.

Bus ride. 
It was a hop on, hop off tour today. We hopped on and then sat in some traffic. We did see a lot of sights and it helped us realise how big London is. The history here is incredible. Bits of Roman wall sit in places where you walk. 55AD. Like ... what??





The Tower of London. 
This was our first tourist stop. It was hot. 31 degrees hot. The lines weren't long though. This is a must do if you come to London. The Beefeater Tour Guide was hilarious. He did a brilliant Donald Trump impersonation. And paid out the Americans. A lot. We were in fits. 

It was a bit sobering. I think we were all very pleased we weren't royal and living in the 15th/16th Century. Being King or Queen didn't stop your head from rolling. He told a very powerful tale of Lady Jane Grey, who at barely 16 lost her head due to the decisions men made around her. So sad. 

But the age and detail that exists behind those walls are incredible. And the Crown Jewels. 
Wow. Wow. 




Evening Life.
We successfully navigated the DLR and made our way to Canary Warf to met Vikki and Matt to watch a movie on a big screen. Grease. It was pretty cool, so many people, lots of business people and some singing. It did rain, but no one was complaining. 

PS It really isn't a great movie. But the songs are great. And a crown singing them together is really fun.

      It was a great movie! Although I have to say that it hasn't aged that well. I so bet she would have, we could watch it tougher when I come back!

      I am having an amazing time. So far my favourite part has been the Globe Theatre and St Paul's. Today we are heading to Westminster Abby.

    hi miss sprag, it looks like you are having a good time. I remember when we did a tour in London. it was really fun because we had a double decker bus and we sat up the top.

      We are having a blast in London. It is one incredible city. Sadly Big Ben is all wrapped up getting some repairs done so we haven't been able to see it. Luckily there are lots of big old buildings though. Everything seems so old or shiny here. It's pretty amazing.

I think you would enjoy reading all about the history and seeing all the incredibly old things. Yesterday we were walking along a lane and there was the ruins of an old castle. How cool is that?

Before we left the beautiful city of Florence, we had one more place to visit. The Cathedral of the Basilica. So after packing up our gear, finding a place to leave our bags for the day, we headed through the already hot streets to stand in line. And the line was long, and it wasn't even opening time.  Once the doors opened the line moved quickly and in no time we were in the Cathedral. We weren't too sure what to expect, but clearly, they had spent most of the money and energy on designing the outside of the building. It was still very large and had some lovely features. Addio Roma

Packing up and trying to work out what to do with our gear is never that fun, however, our kind Air BnB host had allowed us to leave our bags in the apartment till we left at 4pm. This meant we could still tick off a couple of destinations without carrying 10kg or so on our backs.  Today's destinations were the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. The bus ride was easy and the walk through the little Italian streets made it quite delightful. You can always tell you are getting close though by the increase in tourists. And then we were there.  The large fountain towering over us with ... no water.  What?  Isn't it a fountain.  Turns out the thing is being cleaned, so instead we got to see men giving it a bit of a water blast. Fun.  We did some googling and found out that it is the end of an aqueduct, the only one left functioning after the Barbarians destroyed the rest. (Barbarians!) It's big, it's hot and it leans ...

Our only full day in Florence. We had a lot to fit in. The first thing was to try our luck at getting into the gallery where 'The David' is. The line was already massive so we paid a little extra and got into a guided tour.  We were glad. No big lines, no fussing over tickets, no audio guides. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and we learnt so much about the art and the artists. We also could go around the gallery once we were finished our tour. This piece was amazing. It was by Jean de Boulogne. It was actually the plaster cast, not the real thing. When artists created their works they created a plaster cast first then the actual statue. Usually, they get destroyed but Jean didn't because he liked it so much, he kept it for himself.  This is one of the prisoners.
